Gaps that open between planks, boards that cup, and soft or squeaking spots underfoot are rarely material failures. They almost always trace back to the subfloor. A substrate that isn't flat, dry, and structurally sound will telegraph every flaw through whatever goes on top of it, so leveling, moisture testing, and addressing movement are what determine whether a floor performs or becomes a callback.

Material choice depends on the room. Luxury vinyl plank has become the default for most spaces because it handles moisture and traffic well and looks far better than it used to. Laminate remains a solid value option, and hardwood adds the most resale value but doesn't belong anywhere moisture will move it. Transitions and edges are what make an install read as finished.
